How long to breath right and training insights?

I know there aren't any shortcuts and it takes time and consistent work. I've casually swam my whole life. Just messing around in the pool, but nothing ever serious.

Training for a sprint triathlon now. Race day is May 31.

Have watched tons of videos and read a fair amount here in breathing techniques.

Was an avid runner for years. Can still knockout a half marathon with little training.

No problem cycling either.

But man, when swimming and trying to be mindful of my technique and breathing, I'm gassed after 50m freestyle.

Currently only two weeks into it. Upped it to three days per week at the pool on the second week and will aim for a minimum of three days per week till race day. Second week I've noticed breathing is getting better, but still, it isn't quite clicking like I'd hope. Like I said, I know it won't happen over night, but I feel like my strength and endurance are there, but the breathing aspect seems to be holding me back from feeling relaxed and able to go longer distances, all in freestyle.

Anyone care to chime that has decent cardio in other activities and how many weeks/months till they got the hang of breathing while swimming?

Also, since time is a bit limited when I'm at the pool, should the wall breathing exercise be done first or after a workout or warmup swim? I tried it the first time today after doing 700 yards and even the wall breathing thing was tiring. Trying to be mindful of not exhaling too much, but still feel like I'm gasping for air.

Also did a front snorkel for the first time and quickly figured out I need to breath out through the nose sometimes to keep water from going up my nose.
