Cross country skiing good cross training for swimming?

This is a thought I feel I need to share.

I normally would be trying to get on the cross country skiing trails this time of year to get the last bit in before the snow disappeared. Last week however I had a gout flare up and decided to hit the pool instead of the trails, as putting weight on my foot seemed undesirable. The gout flare up was most likely to lifestyle choices I try to offset with skiing and swimming.

My butterfly felt easier than it ever had (still extremely demanding), but I noticed the dolphin kick used my core in almost the exact same manner as double poling on classic skis does, the pattern of crunch-hip thrust repeat. I am wondering if anybody can confirm that this is indeed the case and not a symptom of being more buoyant due to being fatter.

If you need background on my swimming ability here it is: Didn’t swim competitively as a kid but after maxing out swimming lessons I was in junior lifeguarding clubs until I got my NLS award (Canadian lifeguarding certification). Throughout adult life really just swam for recreation, would periodically check in on my skills. One exception is when I was in university my dorm roommate had a friend who was going to tech him how to swim with proper form, and I asked if I could tag a long to get a workout in. Turned out this guy was an uber competitive swimmer and gave me the most gruelling workouts I had ever done in a pool. He didn’t really have any form tips for me other than to go harder.
