Kid made high school swim captain but people seem to be bullying her-even the coach

My kid is a senior in high school. She did club swim for a couple of years when they were a kid for fun but we moved and they couldn't continue. They joined the high school swim team as a sophmore when we moved to this school district.

She loves swimming but is not the fastest. She says she is actually the slowest on the team (9th-12th) because everyone else has been doing swim since they were kids. She still loves swimming and seemed to have made a few good friends on the team.

At the end of last season they voted on captains for this school year. My kid was chosen as one of two captains. She was beyond excited and happy and we are all so proud of her (always) and she was so proud of herself.

Before school started she heard that other kids on the team were talking bad about her, saying things like they couldn't believe she made captain and that she sucks. Now she feels like she got picked captain as a joke.

She said even the coach was acting rude about it and said to her at one point, Yeah I couldn't BELIEVE it when I saw the votes. This all really hurts her self esteem. She said she didn't even want to swim anymore (we have convinced her to stick with it).

I was always under the impression that her high school swim team was a very positive and supportive group with great coaches. She is a very independent person and wouldn't want me meddling, but how can I support her or help her to better support herself. Any advice?

She swims purely for fun and exercise and doesn't want to swim in college. She does try her best to beat her times and go faster. I would just hate for her last year to be a bummer because of her peers or coach.
